Octave Cat

H/W 신디사이저이지만 Behringer에서도 데스크탑 버전으로 Octave The Cat을 제품화한 적이 있는데 오늘은 충실한 S/W 에뮬레이션 소식이다. 

 

Cherry Audio사는 설립된 지 그리 오래 된 회사는 아니지만 빈티지 아날로그 신디사이저 에뮬레이션 제품들을 줄기차게 발표하는 회사이다. 마치 H/W 신디사이저계의 Behringer를 보는 듯 한데,  오늘 빈티지 아날로그 신디사이저 명기중 하나인 Octave Electronic사의 The Cat을 VSTI화한 Octave Cat을 발표했다. Octave사는 후에 Plateau사를 인수해 Octave Plateau사가 되는데 New Order가 아주 잘 써먹어서 유명해진 Voyetra 8을 제작한 회사이기도 하다.

Octave The Cat 실기

1976년도에발매된 The Cat은 ARP Odyssey와 유사한 디자인과 사양으로 ARP사에게 고소를 당한 일화가 있기도 하다. 외관보다도 특히 키보드 회로의 디자인(듀오포닉 키보드 신호 회로)이 초기 Odyssey의 것을 침해했다는 내용으로 ARP가 소송을 진행했지만 결과는 ARP가 소 취하. (이와 무관하게 ARP도 Moog에게 필터 디자인을 베꼈다는 건으로 문제가 발생했고 고소까지는 가지 않았지만, 서로 협의해서 ARP가 Odyssey에 Moog의 래더필터 모델은 못쓰고 이후 리비전들은 다른 필터모델로 교체한 바 있다).  아무튼 ARP Odyssey와 Octave The Cat는 둘 다 듀오포닉이었고 사양이나 디자인면에서 ARP Odyssey와는 유사점이 상당히 많다. 좋은 맞수라고나 할까.  
 
Octave사는 1976년에 The Cat를 발표한 후, 이어서 1977년에 SRM(Series Revision Model) 버전을 발표했는데 여기에는 마이너 개수하고 듀오포닉 키보드회로를 새로 설계해 신뢰성을 높인 것이 큰 차이점이다. Cherry Audio의 Octave Cat에는 이러한 사양이 모두 포함되어 있다. 

 

이번 제품화는 그간의 경우와 약간 다른 것이, 실제 Octave Electronic사의 창립자이자 The Cat의 디자이너인  Carmine Bonnano와의 지원과 감수를 통해서 만들어진 것이다. 그래서 제품명도 굳이 엇비슷한 느낌의 것으로 피해갈 필요도 없고 GUI도 실제 The Cat의 로고도 그대로 들어가고, 모양자체도 실물을 그대로 옮겨 놓은 듯이 만드는 것이 가능해 진 것이다.  실제 제작자인 Carmine Bonnano에게 사운드의 재현도나 퀄리티도 인정받았다고 홍보하고 있다.

데모를 다운로드해서 약 1시간 가량 연주해보았는데, 개인적으로는 지금까지 나온 Cherry Audio 제품중 가장 마음에 드는 제품이었다. 실기의 Envelope 리피팅 기능도 당연히 구현되어 있고, 전반적으로  빈티지 아날로그 신디사이저 특유의 질감이 잘 구현된다는 느낌이고, 실기의 재현 + 온보드 FX류와 시퀀서를 포함시켜 놓아 사운드면에서 확장성이 꽤 좋아진 것이다. 요즘 제품답게 MPE도 지원하고 있고 편리성이나 기능성면에서나 S/W 버전이 가질 수 있는 이점은 최대한 활용한 느낌이다.  

아래의 비디오에서도 나오지만, 실기 자체의 기능에 부가된 온보드 FX와 시퀀서는 정말 훌륭한 보너스이다. FX들과 시퀀서를 조합하면 다양하고 개성적인 소리를 낼 수 있는데, 특히 시퀀서에서 단순히 오실레이터를 제어하는 것 말고, VCF와 VCA를 리트리거할 수 있는 기능에 FX를 조합하면 대단히 멋진 소리가 만들어진다.

Octave Cat는 실기와 마찬가지로 모노포닉과 SRM 버전에서의 듀오포닉, 그리고 가상악기 버전에서의 폴리포닉, 이렇게 3가지 보이스모드를 재현해놓고 있으며, GUI는 오리지널 MK1 버전의 것과 SRM(Series Revision Model)의 것 2가지를 갖추고 있으나, GUI에 따른 사양의 변화는 없다.  

 

Octave Cat는 책정가 69USD이지만 현재는  초기판매가격인 49USD에 판매되고 있다.
